It’s basically game of thrones for teens.

Huge, epic, and gay. Quality animal and dragon friends to help our protagonists (I especially loved the Ichnuemon). All but one of the pov characters are POC. I wish I could watch this as a series. 5/5 stars and no notes.

I don’t know how this book managed to surpass my expectations but it did by leaps and bounds. A perfect world, magic system, writing style, structure, and cast of characters. I was convinced I’d be saying it was too long, but if anything it could have been longer - I would spend forever in this incredible world with these life like characters. Loved this.

“No woman should be made to fear that she was not enough.”

THIS BOOK!!!! The size of it intimidated the hell out of me, but I’m so happy I finally picked it up. The world-building and the lore were absolutely wonderful and expansive. Some parts felt slow in the beginning, but Samantha Shannon’s writing kept me interested. As everything started to unravel and connect, I became more and more hooked on the book.

The characters made me go through different journeys with varying goals; I loved every second of it. Every adventure and every fight had me sitting straight because I never knew what would happen next.

After finishing this, I can say with my whole chest that The Priory of the Orange Tree truly deserves its hype.

I wanted to like this so bad, but instead I was thrown into the biggest reading slump ever and every time I picked up this book I wanted to dnf it. The world-building was very fascinating in its depth, which also unfortunately made it difficult to get into the story; I was about 300 pages in when I finally felt like I was sucked into the world — 300 pages, a whole book length! Then I was hooked for about 200 pages, after which the story began to drag on and on again. Idk if it was just me, but even in the end I was not entirely sure of everyone's roles and relationships, despite there literally being a character guide in the book..
If you like detailed fantasy worlds with diverse cultures and an extremely slowly burning plot (with even smaller and slower sprinkles of queer relationships), this might be just the right book for you. If you like anything concise, consider skipping.
Spoiler The romance between Ead and Sabran was one of the few things that kept me going <3
