Carole’s son is getting married! But there are clearly some skeletons in his fiancée’s family attic and when the father of the bride disappears after the engagement party Carole is soon investigating but it leads her and Jude into danger. Lots of fun.9

...I had never read a Simon Brett book before this one, and I didn't even finish this. To be fair, I was super busy at the time, and I wasn't really invested in the story. Despite that, at a certain point, I just didn't care at all, so I ended up giving it away before I even finished the book. A few things that I didn't like about it was how Carol (I'm not even sure if that's her name, sorry if I got it wrong) played the detective and somehow was just in the right circumstances and got a bunch of classified information that would help her solve the case. I wondered why the police didn't stop her from getting involved and it just seemed really far-fetched and unrealistic to me. She interviewed people and they just plain out answered her. It was so unrealistic and basic. Why was she so set on doing the case herself anyway? I never really cared for the characters and I wasn't invested in the story. It's unlikely that I'll pick up another one of the Fethering books again, but I might give Simon Brett another fair try. I would not recommend.

Was an okay sort of cozy mystery - my first one by this author. I listened to the audio while at my routine household work and walking trips. Gaby and Steve are planning to marry, and Steve's mother Caroline, a type A personality, is worried about wedding arrangements and a possible reconciliation with her wimpy ex-husband David, which she doesn;t want and her only son Steve urges her to. Then she comes to know that Gaby's family is surrounded with murder and mysteries, which turn sinister within weeks leading to murder of her father, her brother's disreputable friend and threats to Gaby and even Caroline. What does a 30 year old murder have to do with present circumstances? Caroline, with the help of her quaint neighbour Jude, and Jude's houseguest, a recovering journalist, tries to find out.

My favorite of the Fethering series so far, since the structure of the mystery didn't follow the usual pattern. Excellent book!

I listened to this as an audiobook, so my review could be influenced by the reader on the tape. It wasn't a bad book but slow in the beginning, and then gave away too much so that I had the entire mystery solved when there were still 2 of the 7 CDs to go.
