It got very interesting at the end which is what bumped the rating up but for the most part it was okay, the writing isn’t what I expected from my previous experience with this author’s books. I have an ARC second book so I’m curious to see how that one is.

I received an e-arc of this title from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Magic is rare, illegal, and deadly. So when Josslyn accidentally gets magic in her she is desperate to get it out. There is nobody she can trust, especially since she is seeing the memories of a famous evil warlock. But when the criminal Jericho says he will help her get it out so he can get the magic she accepts.

I honestly ate this book up, I didn't want to put it down. I said I grew out of young adult books, but maybe I was wrong! I really enjoyed the plot and how fast-paced everything was. The twists were just so unexpected and exciting it was thrilling. The world-building wasn't the strongest, but I still enjoyed it.

My favourite part was the characters. There were so many antagonistic characters that are flawed and selfish and untrustworthy. I loved it. Rhode is strong, cunning, adaptable, and so full of herself it's great. Rhodes is rude, mysterious, hot, witty and a total bad boy with baggage. There is bed-sharing and enemies to lovers, need I say more.

All the additional characters including the antagonists all stand out to me. They don't appear a lot in this book but are important to the plot. I just love books that make you question good and evil. I don't want to say too much but I am very excited to see what happens in the next book. Overall this was a great read and I totally recommend it!

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING

i really did give the book the benefit of the doubt for most of the book, but the plot felt really contained, despite there being pretty crazy stakes it felt like they were repeated into our face to the point where we were like “yeah we get it good job”

which really brings me to the next thing: it was like the book was written by a sixth grader sometimes. everything was sort of in our face all the time, there was no building up to the things and letting the reader understand and feel those emotions and danger.

so, 3 ish stars. i liked the plot and idea of it all to keep going, though the plot twists were a little too comical and way too many to make any of the plot twists interesting by the end. i didn’t know that lord banyon was her dad until she told elias and i was like “oh” because there were so many it didn’t matter anymore. that one plot twist was just not very good, didn’t have build up or impact like the jericho killed her dad plot twist which was also completely undermined by the fact that her dad isn’t her dad.
