Super adorable, coming-of-age story that taps into that awkward “I’m not like other girls” feel of being a high school freshman. Has a few lines that would not fly if it was published today. I like Lily’s characterization here a lot more than in the movies.

3.5 stars. Cute, fluffy read. The movie stayed pretty true to the original storyline- which I liked!

I have been meaning to pick up this series for a long time, and since the first adult novel in the series just came out I figured it would be a great time to start and then just keep reading. The Princess Diaries book, I am happy to say, is nothing like the movie. I am so happy when the book is so much better than the movie and in this case it really is.

Obviously, same premise - Mia is an outcast and suddenly learns she is a princess but a lot of the movies big changes are just that. For instance, Mia's grandmother - kind os a crazy person in the books (at least so far). I really enjoyed reading this one, I flew through it. It is in the format of diary entries and so they are short excerpts of Mia's life and what is happening to her and the world as she learns about her new great responsibility.

She is everything you think she will be in this book - nerdy, quirky, angsty, frustrated - it is every real teenager only this is tenfold because now she is a princess and she hates the thought of it. She just wants to hide and get through high school. I honestly don't blame her.

I already grabbed the next one from the library and will be jumping in soon.

Mia is a just a normal 14 year old girl going to school and trying her best to not be noticed. At least, she doesn’t want to be noticed as a freak. But that changes when she is thrust into responsibilities of princess-hood as she finds out she’s part of the royal family of Genovia. Now everyone knows her name and who she is and she’s on the verge of a panic attack.

I didn't think I was going to like this as much as I did. It's pretty different from the movie. For starters, Mia’s dad isn’t dead and she doesn’t live in San francisco. The differences were nice and made everything new and refreshing. I thought it was super witty and made me laugh a lot. All the characters are really smart but they all sound like teenagers with angst and paranoia of being “unpopular” and “weird.”

I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Anne Hathaway, and she did a super job. It obviously gave the book that extra something since she played Mia in the movie adaptations.

I really liked this book; it was short, sweet and cute, but I felt like this was a rare occasion where the movie out shined the book. Maybe if I read the rest of the series it will get at some of the bigger themes. Overall, what I really didn't like is the reason Mia chose to go on and try to be a princess. I didn't think donating some money in her name was really what being a princess is about at all. Overall it was a really good book that I would recommend to anyone, but compared to the movie, it was slightly disappointing.

Cute enough. Anne Hathaway narrated this audiobook so that was disappointing. Mia is a cute character who got less annoying as the story went on, but this is still a book for a very young audience.

This is an amazing book. I picked it up, thinking it really should belong in juvenile fiction, and found myself very wrong. Mia has a very interesting thought process and is very similiar to me, as far as thoughts go.
This book really signifies that no one needs to have bottle-hair colors, sexy clothes, a boyfriend, or even boobs to be gorgeous. It's hilarious; one of the few books that have caused me to laugh outloud. It is very different from the movie.
If you are concerned about being too old, you aren't! This book would be PG-13 in the theaters if it had followed the real plot, unlike the movie.
