This was... dense. I read Adeline Yen Mah's 'Chinese Cinderella' when I was in primary school and it was the first book that ever made me cry. The first half of this book was essentially that same story, perhaps recounted in a little more autobiographical detail. I struggled to get into it at first, as she shared the same childhood anecdotes I had already heard, however, the second half of this book went on to describe Adeline's life as an adult, and it was this that really moved me. Reading how the injustice and inequality in her family continued to follow her throughout her adult life, even amidst a successful career as a doctor... it was painful to read. The last few chapters in particular... the unrelenting injustice... it just made me so angry, and hammered home something I'd known all along: at the end of the day, all we want is to be loved and accepted by those close to us.

Bit of s slow start but then I got into it. If it wasn’t a true story it wouldn’t be so awful. But it is such a pathetic family story.
