My daughter bought this YA book as her Halloween read last year and it's been sitting on our VE Schwab shelf on the bookcase waiting for me to pick it up.

This quite slow-paced book is a great balance between fantasy and mystery with enough substance to keep you gripped throughout. Lexi, the main character, is a strong young woman and it is interesting to observe the different relationships she has with the other characters as she tries to solve the mystery of the missing children of Near.

NB:  It's a sign of a tense, descriptive book when you go upstairs in your empty house, hear a small noise and leap with your heart pounding!

Maybe more in the very high 3s but I really enjoyed this book. It feels perfect for fall. It’s moody & atmospheric, is a little spooky, and has witches. I really enjoyed it.

Spoiler El pasado de Cole/Will?????

I was glad to have the introduction to the rerelease, which described the book quite well. As always with Schwab, the atmosphere was phenomenal. The characters weren't awesome, and I was a little off put by the insta-love. Audiobook narration was decent to good.

I don’t know where to begin with this. Victoria Schwab is a beautiful mind. Her writing is so captivating it was unbearable to put this story down. The story of the Near Witch is reminiscent of all the folk lore tales grandparents and great grandparents shared with us growing up. The character crafting is stunning and while the storyline as a whole could be considered basic in a sense, Schwab’s definitive touch makes it an exception to typical story telling. I highly recommend this for an introduction into Schwab’s writing. I loved this story from beginning to end and wish I could read it again for the first time, I know for a fact it will become one of my favourites and I’ll be recommending it to everyone
