i didn't find this compelling the way i found [b:The Unseen|31936168|The Unseen|Roy Jacobsen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1473520085l/31936168._SX50_.jpg|25879684]. I read The Unseen during a time of covid when it felt familiar - the isolation, and the solace in homesteading. reading White Shadow also feels reflective of this era of covid, but in a much less fortunate way. the paranoia, the exhaustion, the relentlessness, the lack of control over one's own household or peace.

Simple beautiful prose, and a setting that I can't read enough about. I loved the simple scenes on Barroy and island life. Unfortunately,  I don't feel the sections away from Barroy worked as well, and I did get lost at times with the plot and character motivations. Also I was a little uncomfortable around the sexual relationships with large but I still enjoyed this overall.
