A sort of coming-of-age novel about a budding socialist/communist/Trotskyite trying to engage in a bit of spycraft. The plan was always vague, seemed unlikely and preposterous (like why the convoluted method of getting half a message from THE Franz Kafka over which a cipher would be placed to eke out a symbolic message? In another country?) and was never going to work. When it inevitably failed I was disappointed anyway. This was a well-written novel and enjoyable.

Humorous but I wanted to more. Intriguing but also a little too on the nose in parts. The overall conceit, though, is fantastic.
