WOW. Simplemente... wow. Wow, Mindy McGinnis.

“But boys will be boys, our favorite phrase that excuses so many things, while the only thing we have for the opposite gender is women, said with disdain and punctuated with an eye roll.”

Punto final.

“You see it in all animals. The female of the species is more deadly than the male."

WOW. SIMPLEMENTE... WOW.

“You can love someone down to their core and they can love you right back just as hard, and if you traded diaries you’d learn things you never suspected. There’s a part of everyone deep down inside of them not meant for you. And the sooner you learn that, the easier your life is gonna be.”

This is a fairly brutal young adult book told from three perspectives; Alex - whose sister was raped and murdered within the last year, Peekay - the preacher's kid trying to find herself as well as make friends with Alex, and Jack - popular jock boy who happened to be in the woods the night that Alex's sister was found.

Alex understands herself, the anger she carries around, and what she needs to do with that anger. Yet, she is also looking for comfort in the form of a friend and possibly a boyfriend. She meets Peekay while working together at a local animal shelter (there are depictions of animal cruelty in the book) and they form a close friendship. However, Alex is set on seeking revenge for her sister's death and has some dark secrets that cannot be shared with friends or a boyfriend. There is some graphic violence, as well as attempted rape in the story. I enjoy this author, she writes about real, gritty feelings, along with the hormones of becoming an adult, and when combined, can become volatile and physical.

That's such a good quote!

This book surprised me so very much. It was really, really great. I loved most things with this story and I definitely think that everyone should read this novel.

The Female of the Species is one of the best contemporaries I've read, to be honest. It has a fantastic cast of complex characters, the plot it fast-paced, it handles some really important questions, and it is very emotionally gripping.

“But boys will be boys, our favorite phrase that excuses so many things, while the only thing we have for the opposite gender is 'women', said with disdain and punctuated with an eye roll.”

Wow.

This book was so dark and so powerful. I'm still reeling from it..
It touched on so many important topics that need to be addressed in our culture today, such as rape and the emotional affects it leaves in it's wake, animal cruelty, slut shaming and more. I think this is an important read for young people, any people really, but teens most of all.
This is not a happy book. This is an important book. And I believe it should somehow be worked into the education curriculum.
