I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd installment of the Maisie Dobbs series. The mystery was entertaining and the characters are colorful and fully drawn. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Winspear continues with her uniquely psychological themed historical mysteries. Despite WWI being behind them, Maisie and her assistant Billy learn war is gone but not forgotten. Three mysteries intertwine, including one involving Billy. Personal developments are woven in and advance Maisie's life enough near the end that we are eager for the next installment. Anyone who enjoyed Foyle's War will love how well british history is represented here.

The second book in this series was better than the first. It focused more on the mystery than on Maisie’s backstory. I think this one, like the last one, was very cleanly written, which I appreciate. The biggest downfall for me is that Maisie’s character does not seem flawed enough. She is like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way. She even criticizes herself when experiencing perfectly normal feelings of anger and frustration, which makes you as a reader feel bad for feeling those things too. Overall, these books are like the very opposite of hard boiled mysteries, focused heavily on morality and a just world.

In this story, British sleuth Maisie Dobbs sets off to find a runaway heiress and ends up solving the mystery of why several well-to-do murdered women were found with a bird feather at the scene of the crimes.

I like the setting of these books—interwar England—but Maisie is so reserved and stoic that even her budding romantic relationships are dry. I'm not sure if I'll continue reading the series.

Enjoyable snack and great way to spend an afternoon, but nothing extraordinary. Might read the next in the series, when I need some mindless filler.

Another super lovely book in this series. Honestly, these are such good reads, they have everything from engaging characters, to a rich background, and of course, a fantastic plot.
