The Storm Lord by Tanith Lee

I was extremely disappointed in this because some of Lee's other works i are among my favorites.

However, what i read was ninety pages of seemingly unending sexual and regular abuse and cruelty. It all just kind of sucked. The premise is very folkloric, the true heir raised in secret discovering his identity etc etc, but it really dwells on the horrific parts that folktales generally elide.

It was also A Choice to depict all the males of a particular (dark, of course) race as going into rut when a certain star rises, and then to make sure the narrative affirms this as a biological and not a cultural fact. A bad choice. It sucks actually!

The Vis trilogy is rather dated now, but still intriguing due to the author's unusual ideas and excellent prose.
