It took me over a month to read this one because it’s just… tough. It’s a tough read, tough subject matter, tough everything. Some parts got so intense for me at a tumultuous mental health time for me and I had to put it down more than once.

Of course, Patrick Ness continues with the great writing and world building, naturally. It always is. I can’t say I *enjoyed* this necessarily, but objectively it is a good book. It’s just a challenging read. I pushed through so hopefully the finale is well worth it!

EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY OH MY GODDRRNRR

THAT ENDING
so good.

I LOVED this. The first half was slow and boring and i think it suffered from middle book syndrome a bit. Like it took more time to work on the characters than the plot. BUT THAT SECOND HALF THOUGH. literally so fast paced and adventurous. Viola's character arc *chef's kiss*. Her and Lee's banter was top tier like Patrick Ness could write romance if he wanted to. Todd was kind of annoying though like he needed to shut up. like ur literally 13 years old mate.

Spoiler Davy's redemption arc 🥵😛😧😢😭 Honestly felt so heartbroken at his death like Todd was his only friend and he turned the gun on him and then his own father killed him. Ugh i hope the mayor dies, absolute twat and pedo. like he was so creepy to viola.

I found this book really quite difficult to read so it's taken me a lot longer to read than the first book.

Big trigger warning for physical and emotional abuse, slavery, torture and genocide.

Actual rating: 4.5 stars

What an amazing sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go! As usual, Patrick Ness' writing is palpable and searing that it'll leave you at the edge of your seat, wanting to read more and more. The book further tackles the social commentary on colonization, genocide, and war.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed read. Pick this series up ASAP!
