Being a classic I thought I would find some redeeming quality to it but I could not. Between the grooming of a child and then discarding her resulting in her suicide and the complete distain the main character has for everyone and everything except for his obsession, I had a heard time with it.

I have been a big Gabriel Garcia Marquez fan since early high school when my Spanish teacher introduced me to the world of spanish language books and films; One Hundred Years of Solitude will always be one of my most favorite books. Love in the Time of Cholera was wonderful, although very different from Solitude. It took me 40-50 pages to really get into it, and then I loved it. The end is so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes.

This book is soooo long, and yet so little happens, and so much is repeated over and over and over again. I don't really care about the many affairs Fernando Ariza has. The women never get much characterisation. I don't care about Fermina Daza constantly contemplating changing something about her life and then not doing it. I didn't enjoy reading about these characters get worse and worse as people until I hated having to spend time with them to finish the book. Sad, I loved 100 Years of Solitude but this one didn't work for me at all. Maybe not enough magical realism in there.

Undoubtedly well written, but I struggled to get through it, and I despised Florentino so much that the ending angered me.
Be warned of several trigger warnings for sexual assault, racism, grooming, pedophilia, and suicide.
