This book is ok. Overall I enjoyed reading it, but there’s some gaps in the world building and the pacing in the middle is a bit weird. There’s definitely some areas where better editing would have helped and the romance is just kind of…there. I do like the characters and will probably read the next book whenever it comes out.

I came away with more questions than answers. There is torture, magical enslavement, abuse and forced control. I found the book dark and tedious. Even the action was slow paced. I won't be reading the second, I'll just read a summary on Wikipedia. It was too depressing for me.
