3.5/5 but like….. the lower half of that…

I actually enjoyed this read but I didn’t believe the love aspect of the story. Needed more build up. Since the story revolves around that, it really impacted my take on it.

Dystopian book to a T. Not bad, I think she’s a little dumb but that’s main character syndrome

It was interesting. Good book.

3.5 stars, I enjoyed considering the concept of this type of society but overall it was a little underwhelming. Not much of a cliffhanger so I'm not exactly sure where the next book is going to go, looking forward to it!

I thought the concept was interesing but the book it's self was very slow at times and I had to make myself continue reading. I also wish there had been more character development ofetn I was confused as to why the chracters were doing the hings they were because there motivations wern't fully explained. The ending was very frustrating not sure if i'll read the sequel but I am a lillte curious if the author improves as the story goes on.

I have always wanted to read this book since it was popular back when I was in high school. I thought it was going to be as great as Divergent or The Hunger Games, but I was unfortunately wrong.

Re-writing my review after reading multiple other critical reviews and giving this book some more thought.

Cassia is a stereotypical Y/N character from the 2010's era of YA books, and then there is the whole love triangle with her best friend and an outcast/dark-aesthetic guy. I have already seen this exact love triangle in Shadow and Bone. The world-building is also poor and unoriginal, which is probably one of the biggest let-downs of this book, if not the biggest.

I ended up abandoning this book 90 pages in, mainly because the plot is not linear. I do not want to read 5 chapters of filler content that doesn't contribute to the overall plot. I was also expecting more action and adventure, until I realized that this was a dystopian romance book (as in, romance book in a dystopian setting). We read about the matching banquet, then the ceremony commences, and the main character finds out that there is an error with her match, and then the next few chapters drift away from the main plot. Not one chapter, MULTIPLE chapters-- she brings up her grandfather too much. I can understand if this is a contemporary book that is centered on loss, and I empathize with the attachment she has with her grandfather. However, this is not part of the main plot of the book, and I personally lose my patience when a book with a fast or interesting plot pacing in the beginning suddenly slows down or is ruined by excessive filler content.
