An enjoyable first entry in a trilogy from the always dependable Trudi Canavan.
It has a lot of similarities to her more famous Black Magacian series- a female main character with a strong magic powers and an interest in healing.
This series seems to be on a bigger scale than the previous ones, with a lot of deep world building, with a few new magical cultures and perspectives. This was both a strength and a weakness, as at times, it felt like there was an ever increasing collection of point of view characters, and some were inevitably a bit of a drag on the narrative.
I was not a fan of what seems to be the series (view spoiler) but this was just a small part.
Interested to see how it will progress.

I'm giving this book a 3 star rating because I did enjoy it enough to read the entire trilogy, and my disappointment at how everything turned out, probably shouldn't detract from the fact that I did read the trilogy. The story was intriguing enough but the ultimate ending was so obvious that I was a little annoyed and have vowed never to read anymore of her books, no matter how much everyone else raves about them, and no matter how intriguing the covers look.

A really enjoyable, well fleshed world where the story is told from multiple viewpoints (a mechanism I enjoy). It was however a little difficult to get into and a bit slow to get going, even accounting for it being a trilogy. There was also the fact that a lot of the names were similar, which could lead to a degree of confusion - particularly with the Siyee.
