So I was in a reading slump, for a day or 3. Did not what to start, and started some books, and found I could not finish them. This short, new translation of the Aladdin story was just what I needed to get back in the game. It was fresh, and felt very new to me. I really enjoyed the introduction, because I do not know much about how the Aladdin story came into existence. And now, perhaps, I know even less, because it is still quite a mystery. But it is a great story, a story about a guy, who perhaps was not up to much good, but life had so much more in store for him!

It is nice to read a new standalone translation by a Syrian-French woman of this early 18th century French fairy tale that may or may not have been taken/inspired by a visiting Syrian. The story, along with Ali Baba, was added by him to the Arabian Nights and passed off as part of the original. It is nowhere nearly as good as the multilayered stories within stories within stories of the Arabian Nights and not nearly as stranger or wonderful. But is still an enjoyable read. And, it goes without saying, better than the Disney version. But much better to read [b:The Arabian Nights: Alf Laylah Wa-Laylah|474170|The Arabian Nights Alf Laylah Wa-Laylah|Anonymous|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1238355961s/474170.jpg|859375] in the Husain Haddawy translation.
