Wow.
I rented this book (audiobook) without knowing what it was about, and never having read a book by Jodi Picoult.
I looked forward to every minute I had to listen to this book. Not just because it was so well written, and because hearing the side of each character really invoked perceptions and understandings you couldn’t get from a one-sided story, but because I could feel myself learning. I could feel myself angry and hurt that our world is still in a place with racism at any level. I learned not only that there is much to learn about racism, but much to learn about white privilege too. To know about it is one thing, to recognize it is another.

This is more a 4.5. Love Picoult, though I find the ending just a little far-fetched/schmaltzy.

Not sure how I feel about a white woman writing from a black woman’s pov... and don’t even get me started on all the stereotypes littered throughout the entire book. Mixed feelings, but overall an interesting though admittedly sometimes dragging read

I don’t usually read Jodi Picoult. I don’t like sad, and most of hers are. But I kept hearing about Small Great Things, so I decided to give it a go, and I am so glad I did! It’s not an easy read. It’s powerful, it’s heart wrenching, it is real. It will really make you step back and take a look inside yourself. It is a book I will think about for a long time.
