I’m a little embarrassed that I’m just now reading this book! This has got to be, in this reader’s opinion, the quintessential”English” murder mystery! It’s perfect! From the story, to the plot elements, to the characters, the pacing… not a word out of place!

I enjoyed this a lot more than expected! I know all the Miss Marple stories but never actually read them as far as I can remember at least not in the original (might have read one or two in German as a teen) and was surprised at how "modern" they sound.
Definitly wanna read more of them!

I've read a couple of the Miss Marple series and I never like them as much as the Poirot ones. I think with this one, it's because everyone just describes her as this nosy old woman, and because you didn't get her perspective it was a bit hard to like her or support her. I mean, have a shot every time someone calls her and old cat and you'd be out like Protheroe himself.

Plotwise it was quite sparse and a bit meandering. It seemed to capture elements of village life that had little to do with the plot but added to the setting. We kind of dithered about similar events, people or themes throughout the whole book instead of seeing any real progression. There was quite a pleasing humour running through.
