This was fine, but it wasn't love. The writing style is a bit (forgive me) flowery for my taste, and Saffron is written as though she is very smart, and she mostly is, but she's also painfully naive. Also, she and this Alexander dude should just be buds, what with her "housemate who does housewife duties" bestie pining away at home. Maybe in future books there is a queer awakening for everyone involved? One can dream! But I am unlikely to continue on with the series. This might be more the sort of thing I'd watch instead of read.

This is the first book of a STEM inspired mystery series and it offered an amazing story. It offers characters that are brilliant and charming set to the backdrop of 1920s London.

omg this was so fun! i read this in one sitting. a nice historical mystery that isn’t dry and dense with background information and actually presents knowledge about the time and topic in a pleasant way which sadly i’ve found can be hard for some people to do. i loved saffron and alexander and i also enjoyed her roommate elizabeth. this was just a really nice time. i would check trigger warnings though bc it does touch on some topics and a few things happen on the page.

I enjoyed this book, but I found the middle to be a bit slow. The end was very good though.

A fun and interesting murder mystery novel, I enjoyed the historical setting and the botanical aspect. However I found the story to get a bit redundant after a while - Saffron and Alexander sneak into somewhere they shouldn’t be and find a new clue but don’t know where it leads - became sort of repetitive and less interesting after a while.
I also found some character development left unexplored.
There’s a point in the novel where Dr. Maxwell warns Saffron to stay away from Alexander which piqued my interest in his past. But nothing really came of that warning.
We learn of Alexander’s past and his condition after the war but I thought there could have been more history to his character and why he could have been dangerous rather than the vague background we got.
Overall not a bad murder mystery, it was still an enjoyable and enticing read even if it slowed down in some parts.
