I answered a number of the questions above with "N/A" because the book did not grab my attention the way others have; I'd listen to a couple of sentences but then would find that my mind had completely wandered. The ratings are more geared towards my experience with the book and not of the book itself.

I enjoyed this book, it’s always fun to read a mystery involving poison. The main character is rambunctious and gets herself into a lot of trouble. The little  bit of romance is nice and believable. The reason for not giving this a full 5 is that I’m left not feeling very attached to the main character nor if her story continues.

At a dinner party for University College of London staff, someone is poisoned. Newly hired research assistant, Saffron, puts on her detective cap to prove her mentor’s innocence. Alexander Ashton, another one of the scientists, gets pulled into her investigation and flirting starts up between the two of them. Can they figure out who actually poisoned the guest before a large group of the suspects get on a boat for their research trip to the Amazon? Or will Alexander have to set sail with a would-be murderer? I love a smart and flirty whodunit.

This was fine, but it wasn't love. The writing style is a bit (forgive me) flowery for my taste, and Saffron is written as though she is very smart, and she mostly is, but she's also painfully naive. Also, she and this Alexander dude should just be buds, what with her "housemate who does housewife duties" bestie pining away at home. Maybe in future books there is a queer awakening for everyone involved? One can dream! But I am unlikely to continue on with the series. This might be more the sort of thing I'd watch instead of read.

The basic premise of a woman scientist in the 1920s is really intriguing! But there's surprisingly little written about the main character actually doing anything scientific. It starts out alright, and then is very slow for the middle 200 pages, and quickly wraps up at the end-- which became surprisingly dark, almost uncomfortably. I was going to read the second book...but not sure I want to invest the time. Not a bad book, but just not as advertised.

My biggest complaint is that for a book based on botany, and with the authors note including mentioning botany research, there's a scene in the final third of the book that includes the most inaccurate description of rhododendrons. It honestly took me out of the whole story. Rhododendrons are my states flower and we have them in abundance. Rhododendrons do NOT have thorns! An entire scene centers around this inaccuracy.

delightfully cozy, historical mystery with plenty of twists and turns. as a plant enthusiast, i loved getting hearing this mystery from a Botanists POV and all of the plant facts that accompanied that.
