The book follows Saffron and Alexander as they try to solve the mysterious poisoning of Mrs. Henry. Saffron is willing to do anything to prove Dr. Maxwells innocents that leads her into a lot of trouble. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the two main characters relationship and seeing the tension and romance grow.

I couldn’t put the book down and had a fun time trying to decipher the mystery myself. The reason I gave this book a 4.5 instead of 5 was because the ended was a little drab for my liking. Overall the book was well written, and very captivating, would highly recommend!

At a dinner party for University College of London staff, someone is poisoned. Newly hired research assistant, Saffron, puts on her detective cap to prove her mentor’s innocence. Alexander Ashton, another one of the scientists, gets pulled into her investigation and flirting starts up between the two of them. Can they figure out who actually poisoned the guest before a large group of the suspects get on a boat for their research trip to the Amazon? Or will Alexander have to set sail with a would-be murderer? I love a smart and flirty whodunit.

The basic premise of a woman scientist in the 1920s is really intriguing! But there's surprisingly little written about the main character actually doing anything scientific. It starts out alright, and then is very slow for the middle 200 pages, and quickly wraps up at the end-- which became surprisingly dark, almost uncomfortably. I was going to read the second book...but not sure I want to invest the time. Not a bad book, but just not as advertised.

My biggest complaint is that for a book based on botany, and with the authors note including mentioning botany research, there's a scene in the final third of the book that includes the most inaccurate description of rhododendrons. It honestly took me out of the whole story. Rhododendrons are my states flower and we have them in abundance. Rhododendrons do NOT have thorns! An entire scene centers around this inaccuracy.

delightfully cozy, historical mystery with plenty of twists and turns. as a plant enthusiast, i loved getting hearing this mystery from a Botanists POV and all of the plant facts that accompanied that.

I enjoyed the main characters and the investigation itself. It wasn't entirely surprising but it was fun to listen to.

I enjoyed the characters (mostly) and the setting and the romance. The mystery was alright. The writing was a little amateurish, but not bad. The main character was a little too not-like-other-girls, and there isn't a very good representation of other women aside from the main character (and her best friend who isn't in the book too much but is a welcome voice of reason). Overall, I enjoyed it enough to try the sequel too.

A fun, fast read with enjoyable characters. This book takes place in the 1920's so sexism and misogyny is a part of that world, but there are so many characters that push back against that on a way that felt realistic for that time.

The mystery was well written but not overly surprising. The romance was cute with plenty of tropes. So if tropes annoy you, this probably isn't for you. But if you're in the mood for something fun and fast, enjoy!
