Another reviewer said it better... "Very strange crime fiction, borderline ridiculous but some very funny moments." I come to Hiaasen's books for comfort. They are crass, gritty, entertaining, and not too deep but always have a bit of social commentary. This one focused on the corruption and ineptitude in government regulatory agencies and insurance companies, especially in the face of natural disasters.
I liked all the female characters in this book. From the plain Jane newlywed looking for an adventure to the con artist who just wants to marry a Kenedy to the two sex workers who find a way to get money from everyone.
The racism in one of the characters was pretty jarring but explained by his racist upbringing. (he also gets it in the end) The book was published in 2001 and I am reading it in 2022 so what was more shocking was the complacency of the other White characters. I've read a few books written in the 90s and early 2000s this year and find myself tracking what was acceptable then that would not be now.

I am not sure what I like about Carl Hiaasen's books. I am always torn between shaking my head and adoring where the story takes me. His characters are just not very likeable and always completely crazy. And yet, you find something to like and want to hear the end of it.
This story starts off with a couple on a honeymoon in Florida when a hurricane hits and goes completely nuts after that.

Fluff. Now on to something that stretches my mind and makes me think.

I can see this becoming a movie, if it isn’t always. Our was enjoyable enough, but as a feminist, I object to one character in particular. Will leave her name out so as to avoid spoilers.
