This book balanced lightheartedness and humor with deep grief so perfectly. I've genuinely never laughed so much while reading a book, and there have been very few pieces of media of any form that have elicited the same amount of well-earned and satisfying tears from me.

Finishing this book was hard because I both wanted to know how it ended and loathed the idea of it being over. I appreciate the twists in the story and how earned they felt. They didn't exist for cleverness or because of lazy writing, they existed because the characters made decisions that warranted them.

The cast of characters was truly wonderful. Their antics and their support of each other are equally valuable. The questions they pose and the answes they offer are healing. And even the minor characters have a presence many main characters in other books never reach.

I will say that there are some hard storylines for those who have experienced different kinds of trauma. But as someone who's lost family and friends to similar circumstances, I value the care given to these stories. And, as someone who lost their mom just over 6 months ago, I will say that this isn't something that's too heavy. At least it wasn't for me.

This was such a sweet read that handled the complexity of death and grief, balanced by moments of sweetness and humor. We got to see Wallace learn and grow after losing his life of being a jerk, but even his foil characters weren’t perfect. Hugo, who shows Wallace the possibilities of being a compassionate, kind human, also struggle with being to passive and having poor boundaries with folks who are acting badly but for whom he has empathy (“Empathetic, almost to a fault.”)

I also love that the book celebrates friendship and familial love, as well as romantic, and emphasized the power of found family.

I think the narrator for the audiobook version did a great job as well.

Klune begins the novel with a succinct display of how absolutely despicable Wallace, one of the main characters, is. I felt that the move from Wallace being a completely terrible person to a lovable dead person happened awfully quickly. At the same time, reading about dead Wallace was far more enjoyable, so I think I appreciated the quick transition even if it didn't feel realistic.

Like House on the Cerulean Sea and In the Lives of Puppets, found family is a prominent theme in this novel, and I love it for that, and it brings me joy. At the same time, grief is undoubtedly a powerful theme in Whispering. It is affecting, and there were parts of this book that were just so sad. My heart hurt reading it, even with all the warmth and joy woven throughout.
