For myth making and subcreation this is a uniquely outstanding book. For enjoyability and character driven plot, it's a bit of a slog at times. It's densely packed with undeniably rich mythology but that density threatens occasionally to crush the experience of reading about it.

Not sure how you rate something like The Silmarillion. A lot of interesting stories and material in there. I now don't want to read about Children of Hurin, because they a$$holes.
