Interesting book. Similar to the Count of Monte Cristo, but with major differences. The sci-fi elements were neat. The main character, Gully Foyle, is interesting and utterly unlikeable. I enjoyed the plot and the setting very much. This world where mental teleporting is part of every day life was especially neat.

I'd be willing to read it again.

Also, from Wikipedia, this is cool:

> Bester's description of synesthesia is the first popular account published in the English language and is also quite accurate.

“A man is a member of society first, and an individual second. You must go along with society, whether it chooses destruction or not.” This statement is so false, and yet it leads Foyle to take the right action.

“Faith in faith' he answered himself. 'It isn't necessary to have something to believe in. It's only necessary to believe that somewhere there's something worthy of belief.” Is there any truth in this?

Though I enjoyed reading this novel, I wasn't particularly impressed. The characters felt flat, and the commentary on society unclear. I suggest that maybe, it might be good to read about the background of the novel, as I am surprised a novel of such fame turned out to be rather uninteresting and lacked a challenging of my thinking.

"Gully Foyle is my name
And Terra is my nation.
Deep space is my dwelling place,
The stars my destination."

"It isn't necessary to have something to believe in.
It's only necessary to believe that somewhere there's something worthy of belief."

A great sci-fi story only slightly diminished by some of the outdated mores of the time in which
it was written. I look forward to reading more of Alfred Bester's work.
