I was hoping to rate this book higher. Had it been my first Daphne du Maurier, it may have been, but it's my third. I was expecting a more compelling through line of mystery and suspicion that pulled me through the book, making it as unputdownable as her others. This one seemed to meander about, plot wise, which I wasn't expecting. It was still good, and surprising, and darker even than her other books I've read. I think I was just expecting more.

Atmospheric.

There was some predictability to evolution of the plot, but it doesn’t take away from the story at all. When we first met Joss, I was hoping Mary’s impressions of him would be a misunderstanding.

The loss of a star was mostly thanks to the over-the-top drawing Mary happens upon, along with the villain’s confession. I just found myself rolling my eyes by this point.

This was my third du Maurier novel and once again I really enjoyed it. While I didn't think the ending was as strong as My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca, it was dark and dramatic and still really gripped me. I love her writing and the atmosphere of her books. The ominous mood throughout and the vivid descriptions of the moors and the weather really made the book for me. I'm excited to pick up more du Maurier next year.

I re-read this for my book club and I enjoyed it just as much the second time round. I really love du Maurier's writing and the way she creates atmosphere. It's also always interesting re-reading a book with a twist when you know what's going to happen. I'm still not completely on board with the ending, but it's still a really gripping read.
