Sweet story with endearing characters. Seems written for an adolescent-to-young-adult audience. Not typically my taste, but I did enjoy it. Even as a straight reader, queer stories are important!

Every time I read a TJ Klune book, I fall a little bit more in love with his characters and the stories they live.

I really wanted to give the story a 4.25 because of how much I connected with the characters and thoroughly enjoyed the narration, but there are a few things that need further development in the world building itself to push it over the four-star range. More about the magical system itself and how it integrates with Society, especially if this is an alternate Society where this is supposed to be magical realism.

After discovering that some of the inspiration for Marsyas was from the res schools of Canada, and having a personal connection to Res schools in America from my own distant relatives and study, I definitely have some feelings about how they were represented here. But I'm happy to be able to separate this story from history.

This is the most wholesome [YA] book I have encountered!

It is set in a world of magical beings but the true fantasy elements are the radical acceptance of nonconformity and individuality, the blurring of gender roles, and the amenability of the state to being coopted in defence of difference.  This is prefigurative fiction that doesn't miss a step.

I loved this book so much! I love all the children and Arthur and Linus and Zoe so much, I can't pick a favorite. I read this book faster than anything I've read in a long time because I couldn't wait to escape into their beautiful world

Recommend for teens+. Pages: P. 156 'A vagina being penetrated by a penis.' P. 263 use of pot/marijuana. PP. 274, 276 'deft little bitch'. P. 363 '...shove demerits up his ass.' The Anti-Christ. Just some items to be aware of that may not be suitable for a younger age. Positive queer representation. Belonging, family, nature vs nurture, inclusion, acceptance.
