Honestly, it was okay. I had heard a lot of hype about this book, and I understand it to a point. It’s an interesting subject matter, but it just kinda went on and on. I wouldn’t recommend it nor discourage someone from reading it. Just kinda a meh book.

a memoir that takes beautiful advantage of the form to explore the nature of memory, abuse and family within Mormon fundamentalism. It hit the humanities educator in me with the consistency of how often arts and knowledge by way of a good teacher can shape the life of students in myriad ways while also reminding the current PhD student in me that this is possible and why I pursue knowledge within the academy. truly a staple on the genre for many years to come.

Such a good memoir. Westover relates the most harrowing and heartbreaking events of her life with the detached perspective of a reporter. Letting these events stands on their own just makes them hit you in the gut even harder. Her skill as a writer is all the more incredible considering her upbringing.

To everyone who understands too well why the author kept going back to her family, again and again: I hope we all find our peace someday.

this book is written with the most incredible hope. i have never read a book with such an incredible undercurrent of the force of hope, in fact it has moved me to tears reading it. i don’t think i really have words for how incredible this memoir is. only an overwhelming sense of sadness, respect, hope and admiration for Dr Westover.
