It does harken to colonialism and that Mera was already on Earth for over 300 years researching for her species. I think that's why she feels like an outsider, no longer connected to her home world and probably a little awkward with this world.
Derrick was an outsider, too, because he worked for the ambassador of the Ynaas which was Mera. He was fascinated by the Ynaas and had deep feelings for Mera. They called him a traitor and the aliens were demons.
All the Ynaas want is to give gifts with their technology and live amongst the people, but after a while if Ynaa feel threatened they immediately dispose of the threat. Mera is different, but the people are angry that there's no justice.
Besides these two characters we get other perspectives to help the story along. I would love a prequel to this book mainly about Mera and her planet as well as how she was chosen to be sent to Earth. Overall a good book.
Moderate: Cancer, Bullying, and Death
