Soccer. Strength and resilience. Determination and drive. What’s not to love?

Ok ok. Updating after last night’s book club discussion. There is some content that would benefit from a warning. Abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, extreme patriarchy.

This book implies a lot of things, or lightly touches on some, instead of outright showing it. So upon a quick read it can be seen as a YA book with relatively serious themes, but overall a YA book of love and courage and passion.

However, as an adult reader, if left to dwell on the topics, it is quite a heavy book. I think my initial abbreviated review is based on the outcome which is generally positive and optimistic.

I loved this story of futbol and first love! This book dealt with heavy topics but it was well-balanced with a sweet love story. Camila was a compelling character and I loved rooting for her on the pitch and off.

It was fine, OK. Plot-wise, I seemed like a typical YA novel. My favorite part about it was that it took place in Argentina and it explored that country’s culture and the following your dream aspect was pretty realistic (although I think Camila’s mom would have noticed if her daughter was playing soccer for a year, especially with how often she seems to get injured).

Even though it wasn’t for me, I can see why people like this book and it was great to see the Argentinian culture, especially in the eyes of a teen. If the summary sounds interesting to you, I recommend you pick it up. This book could really speak to many teens.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book for review.
