Decent, if a bit hard to follow. Was, admittedly slogging through it at times.

A haunting tale of how constant letdowns can traumatise and affect a child.

I couldn’t quite get into it, I admit. Every time I sat to read it it just bothered me. The way it’s written is too voiced. It’s far too long for being tolerated in this way.

“That was all there was in this world, people who let you down.”

“I'll click my Time Lord fingers and then what? Streams of children running round the place shouting look at me look at me sliding down the banisters and everything! Click and away off with the chairoplanes in the carnival and the whirligigs of the carousel wrapping up the town like a present in bright musical ribbons.”

Not going to lie, the dialect (the book is set in Ireland), and the fact that the main character descends into madness made this book SUPER tough to read. Following his train of thought made it super difficult for me to understand what was going on at times. The strange combination of naivety and lack of remorse for his actions is what makes everything in this book both sad and more horrific. An ok read, but didn't really affect me in any way, good or bad.

Dang. That was a doozy of a book. So cheerful, so sad, so brutal in pretty much every sense of the word I'm aware of.
