This book is classified as a Graphic Novel, but in my eyes, it is a unique combination of a Graphic Novel and a regular Novel.
Every published book has a lot of work put into it, and you could see the effort put into this book. One thing that stood out to me the most is the illustrated text. You might be wondering, what is illustrated text? This is the first book I've read with illustrated text before but here is an example of what I mean.
Example:
Take this text. "Charlie walked down the edge of the stream."
Now imagine that word "down" going down.
Whether that be arrows pointing down with the word or the letters that make up the word "down" are being illustrated to decline down.
Here is another example with the same sentence above.
Imagine the word "stream" with a little stream illustrated coming out of the text.
That is illustrated text.
The illustrations to the text weren't every sentence, so don't worry it doesn't get overwhelming with a bunch of illustrated text! But I think this really adds to the story.
On StoryGraph, one of the questions asked when you finish the book is if you think the characters are loveable.
For this book, some people said no.
At first, I didn't know why. But after finishing the book, I can see why, but I personally didn't hate them.
Brief Spoiler ahead to explain why the character could be unlovable.
If you don't want to know why, keep reading after this Spoiler.
I tried to keep the Spoiler very minimal and don't go into the story too much to keep it a surprise if it hasn't been read yet.
The main character goes through confusion and self-discovery in this story and, at one point, becomes rude to others around her as she thinks she knows what she wants and doesn't want to be controlled in her actions anymore.
The main illustrations are great and well done. And I loved the story overall. I don't remember there being any missing, unanswered questions that were brought up throughout the story and not answered as you progress in the book.
I also loved the overall message that this book leaves you with.
