I really loved the first half of this book and would have given it alone a much higher rating.  The second half had me questioning if I was still reading the same book, or if there was something wrong with my copy (downloaded from Project Gutenberg).  Turns out it was the same book, just the narrative & style changed completely and I didn't love it.

“[Sherlock] mumbled, ‘The plot thickens.’
‘It was quite thick enough before,’ grumbled Lestrade.”

I don't remember reading this story any time, though I would have sworn I had read the meeting of Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes. Probably it has more to do with cinema and tv shows and less with this story.
The beginning even if it takes a bit to grow up, it presents the characters and the problems. It takes two chapters to acquaint Homes and Watson and another one to get to the chase, but then it's quite quick. The problem I had was with the second part. I didn't remember there was a part following other characters and telling their story to get again back to Holmes and his deductive method.
Of course, this was the first story and Doyle was still exploring his style and the deductive science by which he wanted Sherlock to work.
It feels a bit far fetched, but it helped me out of a reading bump.

I didn't have to, I only had to read one part for class since I came in late. If part two had Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, it would be fine but yeah, no.

I didn't have to. I only had to read part one for class so I only read part one. If part two had Sherlock and John, I'd read part two as well.
