I am so glad I DNF’d. Plot twist was predictable within about an hour of the audiobook, but I stayed around thinking it might be subversive. It was not. Characters were flat and almost charicatures. Insanely graphic torture/rape descriptions that didn’t seem necessary and provided little to no narrative value.

Also ENOUGH with a character being fat and eating chips as a “flaw”. Lydia’s weight was harped on all the time. A reddit commenter described some plot points as, “Lydia is fat, thus she is strong”. I think that sums up Slaughter’s effort on building the characters.

The story was compelling, but should’ve been trimmed down more. It was also much, much more gruesome and violent than I anticipated. Over and over and over. Could’ve done with less of that. I did come to really feel for the main characters, and it made me want to see how things ended for them.

This is not a light read. Take note of the trigger warnings and probably pick up something else if you aren’t prepared to feel a lot heavier.

I had to add like 20 content warnings that I wish I learned about BEFORE reading.

Way too graphic for me. Proceed with caution.

Graphic story. There wasn’t a trigger warning at the start of the book, but it could have used one. I thought the mystery was intriguing, but it was long. I listened 100% on audio and tuned out/fell asleep at times. It was a 3.75 for me, but I was sobbing during Part VII imagining my son all grown up and not needing me anymore, so my heart gave this 4 stars for making me feel something.

This was very good. It start slow with character devlopment in a more literary fiction way. After about 100 pages the thriller part starts and you are hooked. This is a true page-turner.

This story is absolutely horriffic, gruesome, and dark. Definitely not for the faint of heart! I was triggered multiple times and I am not easily triggered in the wsy this book triggered me. So, this is definitely a book you should consider carefully, and you need to be in the right mindset to read this.

The fact that you don't know who to trust gives the story another scary element.
I loved reading about the sister dynamic.

The story is told from the POVs of two sisters, and the diary from their dad. The diary was not super interesting to me.
The ending wasn't my favorite. It felt a bit sloppily finished. But for the rest this was an amazing thriller and I would recommend it to anyone who can handle dark thrillers.
