imo if a character is fired for being gay in act I, that has to be addressed later in the book. And actually addressed not just show us look the homophobe also abused her own child
also just kinda didn’t have a plot. A solid chunk of the problems in this book would be solved if it was labeled as a coming out/coming of age story and not a romcom. The romance aspect truly sucks.
They go on like 4 dates before the third act breakup and im supposed to care that they get back together??
I don’t know why the author tried to bring up Native American activism if they were going to make the only Native American character a villain. Clearly the author cares a lot about being queer in a red state so that’s probably what the book should have been about in its entirety, instead of a weird plot point about being a fake bridesmaid.

Overall, this was good. I wouldn’t call it a romance, the love story is definitely a subplot and honestly I didn’t fully see the chemistry between the two characters. The book centers around being gay in the Bible Belt in the early 2010s. There’s a lot of homophobia, but it centers around queer characters. So the representation is good, but it might be triggering for many people. The growth of the main character is a main plot point as well, and there were so many facets of it that it’s almost too much going on in 350 pages. Not bad for a debut, and I will read further stories by this author but I think this was trying to do too much.

This cute midwest lesbian romance was so sweet and had a lot of found family and character development. I enjoyed seeing the main character's journey through navigating her sexuality while being closeted in certain places, figuring out what she wants to do with her career, and learning how to be a better friend and person. It sometimes felt like the romance took a backseat to her growth, and I was okay with that because she and all her family and friends were interesting and contributed a lot to the plot. Overall it was a lovely little well-written contemporary romance read that the queer community, and specifically lesbians, deserve to have more of within our current heteronormative literary space.
