I really enjoyed this but I fear it may have been a little over-hyped for me.Â
The start has early hints of "there is going to be a big change up" but they do a good job of hiding what that's going to be. The main character is not loveable at the beginning of the book but knowing how well received this book is I knew that was likely to change. The plot moved along at a good pace after the first 100 pages or so and the aliens help keep things interesting.Â
The far future world was well designed, if mostly just hinted at.Â

Thank you to Emily Tesh and Tor for the super early advanced reader's copy - physical copy at that!
When I cracked this book open, the first thing I saw was the list of trigger warnings, and immediately paused, anxious. Then I continued and started reading and for the life of me, I could. not. put. it. down. I literally ran out of annotation tabs that my parents had just gotten me for christmas reading this book! Once I got a little into the book, I realized - or at least it seemed to me - likely to be a commentary on military - especially with there being a non fiction of the same/similar name about world war I.

I feel like the hard hitting and triggering topics were handled super well and I loved the character arc that Kyr goes through - I even ranted to a friend about it and almost - ok fine I teared up when it was over, especially assuming this is a standalone. I cannot wait to have a hardcover copy in my hands in April. The writing was so exquisite, and I believe this is the author's first full length novel? And if that's correct, this is one hell of a way to break into the novel industry and I feel so thankful and lucky to have gotten to read this so ahead of time. I even had a bookmark from my youngest sibling for christmas that perfectly matched that will be in the instagram review posts!
It's been a while since I've even been interested in science fiction, much less a space opera, and this did it for me, but good luck replicating whatever this book did because I don't think I can read anyone else even attempt to replicate this sort of story. Phew, did I make it without spoilers? I shall be returning in April to update with ALL the spoilers because there are lines that are spoilers that I need to share ugh!

It's been a while since I read a book and really had NO idea how it was going to end for so long. Really good, definitely recommend.
I did think the last bit of the ending felt a little hurried, almost like a cop out. It works I think, but it felt rushed and cheap. Also, the narrator had some really impressive voices, buuut the one she used for the main character was a bit annoying unfortunately.

I was skeptical (and annoyed by the protagonist) for the first third, but enjoyed the twists from there.Â

Oh. My. God.
Everything about this book had me on the edge of my seat. I was completely hooked and I couldn't believe what I was reading for the most of it. I really love books that make you think about things and this certainly did that to me. I cannot recommend this book enough!
