I have picked this up based on my friend's recommendation and the cover with it intricate drawings looked enticing. The book is quite popular and have been raved for its content and story- telling. I have also seen this book on several airports and in book stores so was intrigued. However i must admit that I am a bit unsure about my feelings towards this book. Throughout the book we get to see several perspectives and myriad anecdotes to ruminate over thoughts of love and longing. We get the titular 'forty' rules of love. It draws over ideas of sufism and Turkish folklore to weave a rich story about love. However i found myself engaged in it only partially. I liked the chapters on 'Ella' and 'Aziz' specifically and could relate to their world. The world set in Konya was a little out of reach for me. I found myself getting impatient with the pacing of the novel. Hence it took me several sittings to complete this one. I also went over and explored several other books while being on this one so i clearly wasn't as involved. I made quite a few notes and underlined some of the 'rules' which seemed appropriate and something that i would need time to reflect over. Some words, expressions and sufi fables were beautiful. The spirituality that underpinned the story was profound. The philosophical musings and sufism was captivating and beautifully rendered.

Finally after a very long break I've completed the book. Amazing writing style with perfect description. I love the way writer pictured the spirituality but I have a few quries about the concept of sufism. Besides, it's a wonderful writing.

I don't know...it was too eastern/mystical for me to really get into. I just wanted to know what was happening in the present, not all the enlightenment stuff from the 1240's...

The writing style seemed a bit odd, too...not sure if this was originally written in a different language, but that could be it. I really had to push my way through it.
