A well-realized book with a great premise that is dragged down by some incredibly mundane storytelling punctuated by wild, insane moments. I enjoyed all the characters, or else I would’ve easily given up in it.

The last quarter felt both rushed and dragged out, as it shifts perspectives to newly characters for seemingly no reason at all. The conclusion, indeed, is nothing to write home about.

I am very shocked I am giving this less than a 6/5, because I was LOVING this book up to about the 2/3rds point. It just fell kind of flat towards the end, for me. But that first 2/3rd was insanely good. I am shocked in hindsight that there aren't more horror novels based during this period of history because the way Buehlman described it was so daunting and eerie. The entire book reminded me a lot of the segments of ASOIAF where The Hound and Arya are traveling together, but it also reminded me a bit of The Last of Us with a surrogate father accompanying a daughter figure through a plague torn world.

It was a great read, overall.

The Last Of Us im Mittelalter, während die Pest wütet und Religion das Leben bestimmt. Sehr gutes Buch! Eine tolle Mischung aus Fantasy und Horrorelementen.
