F*ck it - five stars for Ziwe!

This book was genuinely hilarious, I think I laughed out loud more than I have reading any other book. It's also very thoughtful and nuanced. The biggest strength of this collection is how well it strikes that balance: funny but thoughtful.

The audiobook did have some issues. A handful of line reads were just awkward and could have used another take. I don't blame Ziwe, probably not her fault. And besides that I mostly enjoyed her narration.

I decided to give this book 3 stars, although it almost reached a 3.5 for me. In the end, I left it at 3 stars because, honestly, I feel pretty neutral about it. It wasn’t thrilling, it wasn’t awful—it was just okay.

I came into it not knowing much about Ziwe, but having seen her a few times on Bravo’s Clubhouse, I was intrigued enough by her presence and the title of the book to give it a try. I’m not sure what I was expecting, and perhaps I should have listened to the audiobook instead of reading it. Some of the sarcasm and jokes just didn’t quite land for me on the page.

That said, there were a few good quotes I took from the book, and certain stories resonated with me as a young, dark-skinned, single, child-free Black woman living in America. Still, it wasn’t the kind of book that gripped me or made me eager to return to it.

I would still recommend others give it a read, as it’s a relatively quick book to get through. However, it’s not something I’m likely to revisit or rave about in the future.

Poignant, funny, thoughtful. I’l became a massive Ziwe fan when she appeared on The Bachelor (which gets a s/o in this essay collection) and this essay collection did not disappoint!!

I read this as an audiobook because I love Ziwe and wanted to hear her style of delivery (and she definitely delivered). I didn’t love the beginning of the book - it didn’t feel that groundbreaking or new - but I loved hearing Ziwe’s accounts of how she grew up, her college poetry class, and how she slowly grew her audience to get her show. As the book continued I liked it more and more, and Ziwe’s voice is so refreshing and fun - she keeps her commentary biting, funny, and insightful, usually all at once. The note this book ends on is particularly special, and felt genuinely moving in a way I needed while listening to it. Having context on Ziwe’s personal philosophies makes me feel even more impressed and invested in her career - can’t wait to see what she does next.
