Sourdough by Robin Sloan

From the start I expected a story with a plot hinging upon a binary of good/bad and tradition/tech. That absolutely did not happen. Sourdough is written with a love for the old and new carefully balanced and refuses to idolize or condemn either. It’s a fun book, written with love and nuance, and makes me think I need to go make some dough of my own.

Quirky, odd and delightfully weird. A bit contrived and overly cute but overall a good fun read.

I was surprised how much I LOVED this book. The characters were interesting and the plot moved at a perfect pace. And I immediately bought a loaf of sourdough upon finishing the book.

Gonna write a full review because I loved this so much but here's some of the many passages I highlighted because they were Just That Good!

'The setting sun lit the house in orange and pink and it made all the Loises look great.'

'She waved, then disappeared, and the light went out but the window was still open to the cold night air and the smell of the fire.'

'I wondered if I had made a miscalculation, and if the King Arthur, with its Protestant work ethic, might be the stronger substance.'

'Old Lois cackled at that. Then another Lois was laughing, and another, and then it was all of us Loises laughing together in a dark-shingled house on the hill behind the hospital with a view of the park and the ocean beyond.'

A quick and pleasant-enough read. The last third or so took a turn for the strange and then ended sort of abruptly. Really like the author’s style, though.

This book made me happy, so it gets 5 stars. It's a charming story about a young woman figuring out what to do with her life with a little twist of a fantastical sourdough starter.

This was great. I wish it were longer and we got to see them connect again in Germany. But an otherwise engrossing slice of life story.

What a quirky, lovely story!

I loved the archivist's line: "even if I fail—this is always the archivist’s consolation—perhaps I will have laid a foundation for someone wiser." I think that may be my motto moving forward.
