The Yellow Wallpaper, Turned, and If I Were A Man were by far my faves from this collection. I’ll definitely be reading more from Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the future!!

How much do you love the weird? Because if you do, there is no reason to miss this one. I can't believe I missed reading this iconic book before.

The first story itself will blow your mind. I love crazy first-person narratives and a woman's madness just grips you and never lets you go. Part of this is great writing, very addictive and unputdownable. The horror is great. And with an opening like this, the book gets off on a terrific note.

All other stories in the book are equally good. They are dark and wonderfully so. Safe to say, if you are bored with sunshine and rainbows and need something bizarre but intellectual, this will be a great great read especially at night.

Why is this a classic?!!

Oh cool she’s manic and psychotic let’s just make it an American classic, just like every other American classic written about a woman *chucks shoe at wall*

The Yellow Wallpaper is so Junji Ito coded, I'd love to see an adaptation made by him. (3.5/5)

As for Herland, they should've burned Terry alive. (2/5)

the yellow wallpaper is an easy, obvious 5/5
~
herland is... trickier for me. i can't decide how i feel about it. on one hand, it feels overly long and bloated; it could have been half that length. it was also insanely unsubtle and felt like someone's fantasy world loredump at times. but on the other hand, i thought the themes brought up were mostly well-handled, and ones we still need to discuss today. seeing three men with wildly differing views of women prevented the story (or lack thereof) from getting too stale. it was so beautifully cathartic seeing them all get taken down a peg or three. it's not a feeling you get in modern "feminist" works anymore. i don't agree with a lot of the feminist takes presented in this novel - anti-abortion with some whiffs of eugenics? - but it does actually have takes, which third wave feminism is sorely lacking. i'd give herland a 3.5/5, maybe. it's a story that goes nowhere, but clearly has a lot it wants to say. shoutout to ellador she's a baddie
~
it feels wrong to rate this collection with a star number. i'm not giving herland 5 stars, but it would be a shame to have the yellow wallpaper listed on my page as not being a 5 star read for me. check it out! and if your copy comes with herland, might as well give that a read too

Really enjoyed reading this! Unfortunately the audiobook doesn't have all the stories, though the narrator is great.

My favorites:
- The Yellow Wallpaper -- if you like Shirley Jackson as much as I do, you should like this too.
- Her Housekeeper -- A homily on how men ought to treat women.
- When I Was a Witch -- A grumpy city dweller is grumpy about all the things that she sees in the city, but suddenly her silent wishes are granted.
