Frustrating. Williams does all the research - goes into the field, reads the books, cites the studies - but somehow doesn't know how to synthesize the research. It's a mess. And that's the least of the issues here. I think she's trying for a witty Mary Roach style but she can't pull it off. She is condescending, rude, and nearly racist to all of the researchers and participants she references and it is brutal. She very clearly feels like she knows better than everyone she interviews and it's uncomfortable. I'm always looking for a new Annie Dillard or Mary Oliver in these books. I never seem to find them.
