I have a really hard time believing that a 40 year old woman wrote this. I'm completely certain she hired a 4th grade class to ghostwrite for her because that's how this reads. I am completely appalled by the lack of both plot development and character development. So much happened in this book but absolutely nothing had any real impact on the rest of the story. Each event lasted for 2 pages and was resolved on the next. There was absolutely no nuance. The author tells us everything exactly as it is. I am embarrassed to have read this and I am still grieving the time I wasted on it.

great book, i really liked it, but just dwel on this for a moment:
he's 15, she's 13/14.
(timeskip)
he's 19, she's 17.
i have no doubt that they do care about each other and their relationship is real but i just cringe when i think about it.

Wow this book is excellent. It would be 5 stars but it took me a minute to warm up and get into the book. But the concept of two best friends, on opposite sides, falling in love, it’s a tale as old as time. It felt like enslavement and north Ireland mixed together and a resistance was thrown in. The ending is unbelievable and excellent. Read it just for the last paragraph!

An amazing book facing many difficult topics: racism, societal standards and mental health. I loved it.
