I love A Lee Martinez so much. His books are always highly entertaining to me. This one was just missing a little something. I'm not sure what it was, maybe it was just the mood I was in while reading. I don't know. It's classic Martinez humor and everything, I was just wanting more of something the whole time.

Constance Verity is fated to live a life of pulpy adventure, always saving the world from robots and ninjas and alien overlords, and it's a lot of fun to see author A. Lee Martinez throw out all sorts of outlandish scenarios as the background to that kind of life. Constance herself is tired of all the hassle, however, and this novel follows her attempts to find a way out of her fairy godmother's spell and settle down to be as boring as the rest of us. It's sort of a loose, meandering plot that doesn't quite hit the heights of Martinez's previous novels, but it's still very funny and an overall solid setup for what I understand is the author's first crack at an ongoing series.

OK, C's ability to defeat everything is amusing, and so is her attitude. And it's fine that she's questioning her role, and Tia's there for her. But that's enough for a novella, and this one runs 365 pages. The plot is less than flimsy, and the Big Confrontation was a damp squib. And what did Thelma add?

So many good books these days, so little time; I'm done with Martinez. One or two of his books is enough.

Probably a bit too wacky and zany for me. It started out well – a girl who has spent most of her life saving the world from countless Bad Guys and Evil Entities, deciding she wants to have a normal life, and therefore deciding to murder her fairy godmother to get it? Damn. Cool premise. It was lots of fun, had me laughing at the ridiculousness of it all, but then the ridiculousness kept on happening, and the sarcasm and quips became a little relentless. I think what I was hoping the book would do was to take all these classic Hero/Adventure/Superhero tropes and go deeper with them, but it just stayed very surface level. Like it was challenging itself to shove more into the story, all while it had its tongue in its cheek, nudging and winking at us. "You thought one secret society wasn't enough? Well guess what, here's another one, who broke off from the original due to political differences!" (That in itself is funny, but imagine that happening all the time and you might see what I mean...)

Ach, wish I'd liked it more. But it was fun. The good bits reminded me of Douglas Adams' sense of humour.

I didn't quite know what to expect heading into this book other than Mr. Martinez has a pretty good sense of humor in his writing. This was fun, it moved at a good pace for me and didn't linger on any one thing for too long. Connie has a great snarky sense of humor that I absolutely love in a character as well as being an all-around badass. I would love to read about any of her past (or future or alternate: reality, universe, or timeline) adventures that she mentions throughout this book.

Just wasn't for me. Almost DNF,

but it picked up/became relevant for me nearer the end.
