You know what I like about the Dresden Files? Sure it's funny and action packed. It has clever mysteries and is occasionally heartwarming or sad.

But the thing I like most about it is Harry himself. He's socially inept, sexist, chauvinistic, too sarcastic for his own good and his self esteem is wallowing in the gutter. But he's a hero, nothing stands between him and doing the right thing. He willingly sacrifices himself to help people he doesn't know and has no connection to.

Could a real person live like that? I doubt it but it's an ideal to aspire too.

I really hope what people say about the series getting better after the fourth book is true.

3.8/5 Nearly a 4 but not quite.
I really enjoyed this book and I rounded it up to 4 stars mainly because from start to finish I didn't really put it down. Read until the small hours and then finished it off in the morning.

I could understand why people may take issue with some of the writing especially surrounding the characters, in particular how female characters are portrayed. However, given the context and overall tone of Harry, it fits the world and point of view.

Reading this book felt as though I was watching a black and white detective show. The plot wasn't overly complex but what gripped me was Harry as a character. He was just enjoyable to follow and whilst the world and themes have the potential to be dark, it is instead a gritty and genuinely funny read. A dark and gritty setting/story told in a lighthearted, amusing way.

I've heard that the series continues to get better and for a first entry, I thought it was solid. Will definitely be picking up the next one.

Standard detective story with a somewhat underdeveloped but promising magic system/universe. Didn't like the fact women are more often talked about (creepily and in unnecessary sexualised fashion) than talked to.

Cliched characters . Predictable plot . Dresden was a bit too misogynistic for my taste. A good writer but just not for me .
