I really loved this book! Definitely one of my favourite books from Emma Hamm.
I think the way she chose to do this retelling is actually very original. Her inspiration for this really made this book stand out against other Beauty and the Beast retellings.
I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

This was my second try at an Emma Hamm novel. I'm not sure what it is about her writing that doesn't work for me, but there's something that just feels off for me. I wish I enjoyed it more because Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale retelling.
Spoiler It might have been how dark the book was at times? I mean the dude throws her off a building at one point and she nearly dies. I don't know, some of it just pretty dark and I think I like my BatB retellings with a little less death?

I felt physical pain while pushing myself to finish this book.

The story started too late. I didn't care for the main character or her conflict. Her father died in front of her and I felt nothing. Got to chapter four and just wasn't hooked in any way, so I decided to put it down and find something else that might interest me better.

This was a unique take on the traditional fairy tale. I honestly have been on a major B&B kick since the beginning of this year so this book didn’t fail to disappoint (I have read some really bad ones). I liked Emma’s writing, I thought her pacing was great and the ending did make me want to pick up the second novel.

The best thing I liked about this book was the world building. I felt like Emma had set up an interesting world full of a lot of mystery and open questions. I was as curious as our main character to figure out why the dreads were the way they were.
I really liked Bernard, our side character, and his friendship with Amica was sweet. I liked Alexandre and the hate to love aspect of this book was great. This is what I needed. A lot of Beauty and the Beast retellings are so quick to make them like each other.

Anyway, I am going to go and read book two now.

Perfect, quick read to distract me from everything that's going on in the world. 5 stars!

I liked it! I don't love it but there was a lot of good happening in the book. The characters were likable with good personalities, I liked the side characters. The ending was a bit rushed and there were some elements that weren't really explained or fleshed out.
