Again, the themes of racism and homophobia expressed openly by so many characters is treated as an expectation of living in this reality.  It’s just unclear whether this was done to help drive home the inherent distrust and distaste associated with vampirism in a racist and bigoted society, or if it’s just an easy parallel to draw from an author who already harbors those dispositions internally.  I’m struggling to understand the devotion to this series by so many. The FMC has no redeeming qualities that I’ve managed to trip over in two books beyond a childish naivety, being blonde, and being uneducated. I guess her devotion to the somewhat-kind-of protection of the other humans in the vampire community is… supposed to be commendable? Meanwhile the MMC is completely flat. The relationship is toxic as hell and they keep using the word love in the lackluster way that people who’ve never been in love use it, as a stand-in for commitment where emotions are supposed to be involved but the participants mostly just enjoy the sex/perks of being coupled and tolerate each other. Overall it’s just… vapid.

Living Dead in Dallas is the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse or The Southern Mystery Vampire Series, it was confusingly racist, homophobic, sexist, and slut shame-y. I understand this book was published in 2002, I just expected better from author Charlaine Harris.

Wow, I don't like the way Harris writes about people of color in this book. I don't like it one bit. There were so many "WTF?!" moments where I had to cringe and pause the audiobook. Also, what is with Harris' love phrases with the word "co*n" in them, I know she's southern but I don't care. She needs to stop using those damn phrases.

There's a bit of homophobia in the book too. Sookie's brother admits to be a homophobe and she yells at him for it, then she turns around and starts having homophobic thoughts about gay characters in the book. Girl, you are no better than your brother.

The spice in here was okay, but what was lacking was the detail .I'm giving this 2.5 chilies out of 5 chilies 🌶️🌶️

With the causal racism, sexism, and homophobia, I can't give this book anything higher than 2 stars. Certain parts were interesting and that's why I'm giving it two stars instead of just one.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...Bill is a dud. I forget how boring his character seems to be, and truly don't see what Sookie sees in him. Sookie is having a streak of bad luck, first, her fellow coworker is murdered and no one seems to care. She then comes face-to-face with a beastly creature who leaves her badly hurt, needing help from vampires who save her life. Since they've done her a favor, Sookie can't help but oblige when the table have turned and they need something from her.

So much happened in this book, Sookie finds herself having to leave Bon temps to use her powers down in Texas where she is looking for a missing vampire. Sookie uncovers a lot more than she expects and finds her own life in danger. Meanwhile back home, questions start to arise when a Maenad strolls into town causing chaos. Having watched the series first, I will say that the plot of the book is jammed packed and doesn't read as well as it does on screen. Overall, I felt like a few storylines could have been cut and re-focused on some of the ones that lacked a bit more.

My thoughts on Sookie are a little muddled, I can't decide if I love or hate her. She has her mind focused on one thing (sleeping with Bill), while that is said, it makes me uncomfortable how close she acts around Eric. She's supposed to be dating Bill, but other than some action in bed, and a few cute moments, you wouldn't be able to tell that these two are romantically involved. I plan on continuing the series as they make fast books to listen to while multitasking!
