I watched season 2 of True Blood before reading this book for the third time, mostly to compare differences between the book and the TV show. In the case of this book, the differences are quite drastic. Jason Stackhouse hardly has any part in this story, while he figures in heavily in season 2 of the TV show. Eggs and Tara (who finally does show up in this volume) are already boyfriend and girlfriend, and do not meet at the maenad's estate, where Tara goes to live for a while in the TV show. There is a big orgy scene at the end of the book, but just the one, and it doesn't seem to be driven by the maenad's powers.

Godfrey (Godric) is not depicted as Eric's sire (I think that was the case in the TV show, but I might be mistaken), but does save Sookie from being raped by Gabe at the Fellowship of the Sun facility. Most of the Fellowship stuff occurs similarly to the show, except for Jason Stackhouse's involvement.

All that being said, the book is far better than the TV show, and I'm glad to have read it again. I have lowered my review from five stars to four stars, though. Enjoyable, but not "amazing." I really enjoy the dynamic between Eric and Sookie, as they get to know one another better. Of course, I can't help but see them as the faces of the actors in the TV show, and feel like that part, at least, was cast very well, especially Pam from Fangtasia in Shreveport.

Ms. Harris is an extremely talented and diverse author, able to craft tales of a different sort, apparently quite easily. I am also reading her Gunnie Rose series, which is not all that similar to this series.

Living Dead in Dallas is the second book in the Sookie Stackhouse or The Southern Mystery Vampire Series, it was confusingly racist, homophobic, sexist, and slut shame-y. I understand this book was published in 2002, I just expected better from author Charlaine Harris.

Wow, I don't like the way Harris writes about people of color in this book. I don't like it one bit. There were so many "WTF?!" moments where I had to cringe and pause the audiobook. Also, what is with Harris' love phrases with the word "co*n" in them, I know she's southern but I don't care. She needs to stop using those damn phrases.

There's a bit of homophobia in the book too. Sookie's brother admits to be a homophobe and she yells at him for it, then she turns around and starts having homophobic thoughts about gay characters in the book. Girl, you are no better than your brother.

The spice in here was okay, but what was lacking was the detail .I'm giving this 2.5 chilies out of 5 chilies đŸŒ¶ïžđŸŒ¶ïž

With the causal racism, sexism, and homophobia, I can't give this book anything higher than 2 stars. Certain parts were interesting and that's why I'm giving it two stars instead of just one.

The Sookie Stackhouse-novels are not literary masterpieces, but there's something that make them a fun read.

The plot of the novel deals basically with three different things: Sookie's coworker is murdered, a maenad makes an appearance demanding tribute and Eric loans Sookie to the Dallas vampires. These three plot pieces are a lot, and they could have been at least two different novels. There's a lot to unpack there.

These novels are meant as light and sexy romp with a touch of darker elements. The light elements are fine, the sexy bits could be a bit more sexy and the darker elements could do with a bit of reflection.

Unfortunately it shows a bit that these books were written by a straight white woman, but I'm not an expert.
