This second title in the Books of Ember made me think about the impacts of "otherness," self-preservation, leadership, cooperation, conflict, and war. It wasn't what I expected the second book to be like, really, but I thought it was excellent.

Not as good as Ember. The prose seemed a bit cheesy and condescending at times, but the plot teaches a wonderful lesson. It was great to read about how the people of Ember lived after the cave.

Truly an amazing read...took me three days to finish this book. I must say I might have liked this book more than I did the first book! You can tell how much the author has improved in her storytelling as well as presenting such tension between the groups in very short chapters. I delved into the story very quickly, it was truly enjoying.

I read the first book nearly two years ago. Then I saw the sequel and finished in a few hours. It was just as good as the first one. ♥ ☺ ☻

Alright, I agree with everyone that this is not as good as the original book, but it was fine. I didn't find it too heavy-handed for a book of the middle-grade age group.

This book could have the subtitle "Men behaving badly while women save the day (again)"

It wasn't as eventful as the first book, I feel, but again Jeanne DePrau is champion of descriptive writing. This book was the natural sequel to the City of Ember as it continued to story line through two groups of people (The people from Ember and the people of Sparks) learning how to work and live together. It seems a bit slow at the start but picks up pacing wise at the end. I reached a point where I thought there is no way this can conclude in the amount of pages left but DePrau did a beautiful job of leaving us with a concise ending that also left us with resonance. I look forward to reading book 3.
